Trail Report: Over to Carter Dome and Beyond! (Part two)

So in my last post I ended on Mt. Hight 4675'. After resting on top, I left Mt. Hight and  traveled on Carter Dome trail over to Carter Dome 4832'. Carter Dome was a little depressing for me. There was a view point I found to take  picture from, but the trail on top was surrounded by trees.

After Carter Dome, headed down the Carter Dome trail 1.4 to the Carter Notch Hut. As we neared the steep climb down the side over to the Hut, there was a sign for a view! I love a good view so I hiked up the trail which was short to see this...

After the view, we traveled down to the Hut. The Hut is smaller then some of the others I have been to, like Lake of the Clouds. There were four tables to sit at, they said not as many people have been staying this summer, though that night they were going to have 40 people which as great! When you stay at the Hut, the care takers will wake you up at 6:30am! So you better be an early bird if you stay at the Hut!

There are other buildings that are for sleeping (as shown) with a nice view of the mountains near by. The bathrooms are located in a separate building off the side of the other buildings.

After leaving Carter Notch Hut, we traveled down the 19 miles Brook Tr, which is 3.9 miles from the Hut, back to the parking. The Hike itself was 10.4 miles, and we started at 10am to just about 6pm. It was worth the hike. Perfect Day as well.

Trail Report: Views from Mt. Hight 4675' (part one)

This past Monday I took a hike up Mt. Hight 4675' and over to Carter Dome 4832' before stopping in at AMC Carter Notch Hut. The hiking trip was 10.4 miles in all. This was a full day hike. We started a little before 10am and finished by 6pm. The views were amazing!!! Mt. Hight gave us 360 degree views.

You travel on Route 16 to the start of the trail, which is close to Great Glen Trails. The trail you start on is 19 Mile Brook Trail for 1.9 before turning on Carter Dome Trail which you follow the rest of the way up to Mt. Hight.

It was a perfect day for  hike. I really enjoyed spending time on top of Mt. Hight. There are no trees, so wind was zipping through me. I recommend to take jackets and hats when you hike for the top. it was nice, but chilly.

Three Haunted Trails I want to hike this Spring/Summer

1. Coppermine Trail

I have always loved the story of Betty Davis meeting her husband, Arthur Farnsworth on this trailback in the summer of 1939. She was lost and he found her. It's that love story of boy saves girl and marries her. But it has a sad twist, which is when he falls on the sidewalk "dead" and Betty is accused of killing him. Later a plaque appears on the trail which reads "The Keeper of Stray Ladies" No one knows who put the plaque but many believe it was Betty Davis herself. The Trail is located off Easton Rd 116, on Coppermine Rd. The Coppermine trail is 2.1 miles and leads to Bridal Veil Falls. If headed near Framconia Notch, check out this trail.

2. Nancy Pond Trail

Nancy Barton was a girl in love, so much in love that she followed her lover's tracks through the cold snow in the dead of winter. Nancy was to marry Jim but Jim left one day without word to war with his brother. Nancy followed his trail but dead at the ponds where she was later found frozen. The trail is named after her and located in Crawford Notch. The trail is called Nancy Pond Trail and it is believed that when she was found she was buried by the pond. Some who have trailed the trail have heard her cries. I am hoping to travel along this trail this summer and see the ponds for myself. The trail is about 4 miles of beautiful nature!

3. Nineteen Mile Brook Trail

 Has anyone seen Red Mac? He was once the watcher for Carter Notch Hut starting in 1916. He worked at the hut for many many years and later when he pasted away, they say he still watches over the Hut. Weird things happen at the hut to this day, some say that you can see Red Mac's lantern shining in the night over by the hut. He still watches over the place. Carter Hut is located in Pinkham Notch. The Nineteen Mile Brook Trail is 3.6 miles to the hut, and worth the trip. I have gone up the trail to Carter Notch Hut a few years ago and I had felt like I was being watched the whole time when I got close to the hut, every eery feeling. The weird part is that I didn't know this story at the time, but now it makes a little sense, so I want to travel up to the Hut again.

It's Still Winter, yet I am already gearing up for Spring. Got to enjoy some muddy hiking come March 21st! I just went to go buy a new map called Hut to Hut on the Appalachian Trail. It shows Lonesome Lake, Greenleaf, Galehead, Zealand Falls, Highland Center, Mizpah Spring, Lake of the Clouds, Madison Spring, Pinkham Notch and Carter Notch. Out of all these Huts I have been to seven of these Huts. I hope to visit the others this summer so I can have all of them to my list. I have never stayed at any of the huts, though I hope to also change that this summer as well. Here are a few Huts that I have visited:

News I found out now!!! Mt. Wildcat

So, I have talked about hiking Mt. Wildcat, but did I write about the AMC hut!? This hut is called Carter Notch Hut and it's found a the near Wildcat A on the start of the Wildcat River Tr. There is a story that it's Haunted by Red Mac. He used to work on the trails and would take care of the hut back in 1916 during the winter months. Many winter hut caretakers have heard doors slam and hear foot steps in the night when no one is around the hut! I have been to this hut before and now hope to journey back to it, so to check it out better! Red Mac said he loved that area for it was a magical place! That when he died he wanted his spirit to rest there and so it seems to be! I remember when I hiked it how wonderful it felt and I believe it's pretty magical! If you ever get to hike up to the Carter Notch Hut, you might see his lantern in the thick woods of Carter Notch!

 This in the Carter Notch Hut! It's set back in the woods after you go around a pond on the trail. It was a really cool hut, bet it would be very interesting to stay for a visit...maybe even meet Red Mac himself while there!

Hiking WildCat

My friend and I really wanted to hike one day but not a very long hike. There was a trail called the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. It started on Route 16 before Great Glen Trails. It was a beautiful day, the weather was nice when we started our hike. We switch trails at the end to the Wildcat Ridge. We went all the way up to Wildcat A which is 4422ft. There we over looked AMC Carter North Hut. It was cool because they were using helicopters to transport items to the hut. We ate lunch and then started back down the trail we came on. It was about a three hour hike in all. If we would have kept going on the Wildcat Ridge Trail we would have hit all the peaks on the mountain ridge, A, B, C, D, and E. This is a hike I would do again but do the Wildcat Ridge to the Glen Ellis Falls.
